Its with a heavy heart that we must inform you that Contort Yourself as you know it will be no more as of 2011.

As a famous man once said “We’ve had a good run”… and we thank everyone who’s ever played or attended any of our parties. It’s all of you that have made Contort Yourself so special to us over the past four years, so Thank You.

We’re going to go out in true style with our NYE party at Night & Day this weekend. As you know the door price is LOW and there’ll be plenty of drinks offers on the night to help loosen your boots. We’ve got no idea where to put his sound, it just new and fresh, which in todays climate is no mean feet. “BOWSKI: a PR Blurb” – by FAKE BLOOD

Bowski. How good is he.
His intricate melodic techy numbers have a mischievous bump that gets the shoulders going. You can’t help but start twitching and jerking about like a clockwork Dracula. And his productions have proper finesse. Skills that hopefully will do more than pay his bills, but buy him vulgar cars and quadbikes and shite jewellery with which he can annoy his village neighbours.

I came across his MySpace page a good while ago. There were about 2 songs on there, and very little info. But one of those tracks was ‘Hooves’, which I instantly loved and played out loads, eventually licensing it for my Wax:On mix CD earlier this year. He seemed quite bemused and surprised by all this, being the humble chap he is; so I thought I’d make it even more baffling and ask him to release some tracks on my label, Blood Music. So here we are… Hope he likes doing all this, cos I reckon he’ll be at it for a while.

‘Leggings’ starts off sounding like a game of hide and seek in a church. Lots of oohs, tapped pipes, and wooden thumps, before a melodic breakdown that reminds me of puppets tumbling around in some kind of baroque instrument. “Reminds” might be the wrong word, as I’ve never actually witnessed anything like this. Then deep voice pulses and chords bring it rising to the point of anticipation – and we’re off – with a bass sounding like two massive toads arguing, over a tight and bouncy techno drum. A pause, then they go at it for a second round, with toad 2 a little more worked up this time, until he resorts to chasing the other around with a dentist drill. But it’s all quite restrained and in very good taste.

I asked Bowski for this version, based on various earlier incarnations of the track – to take the best bits of those draughts and combine them into a new edit. This time the toads are singing a nice question and answer session, before the arguing starts up in earnest. Dancing ensues throughout.

‘Talkbox’. A guy booms and pahs a tune to himself, before the we are transported into some kind of 80’s haunted house Nintendo game. Lots of hopping and chopping through various chambers, big laughing bats swoop around you and bits of the ceiling fall on your head, while the drums roll and skip along, and the subs keep you warm. A male choir imitates the peals of the church bell for the melodic crescendo, and you’ve completed the level. This will sound great in a big room or a sweaty basement alike.

Anyway – I hope you enjoy them

The lovely people over at Traveller sent us a promo of the latest Kojak Giant Sounds EP from Brighton’s Maxi Soundsystem on which the lead track “Criticize” is an absolute corker. The more astute of you may have realised that its a edit of the monster Alexander O’ Neal club jam of the same name, but dragged kicking and screaming up in to a 21st century disco, complete with a throbbing 80s power bassline,  housey keys and punctuated by those trademark soulful vocals. We’re so into this it hurts so expect it to get a serious wheeling out at the Mega Mega Mix next weekend.

Now i know most of you probably ran out to Piccadilly Records the day this bad boy dropped and scooped up a copy for every member of your family in an “Getting all my Xmas shopping done early” frenzy, but for those of you that dont own one of them spinny things its now been released on digital through Boomkat.

Here’s the blurb: “Manchester’s Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub present the debut release on their newly minted Hoya:hoya imprint named after the much acclaimed Manchester club night of the same name. By far the highlight of the release is Lone’s ‘Let The Music Play’, a unique sounding disco track with a thumping kick drum and distorted vocals layered to great effect before a rugged synthline takes everything down a notch. Not only will this be the last Contort Yourself of 2010 but it also heralds the last Contort Yourself in our current format… With the New Year on the horizon, we’re taking a brief sabbatical over January returning back in Feb 2011 (same dates, same venue, don’t worry) but in an altogether different guise. We’ll leave it at that for the time being, but be sure to watch this space for more info early in the new year… so to celebrate the end of this year we though it only right to get stuck into everyone’s favourite the MEGA MIX, but with a little added MEGANESS!
