THE BEGINING OF THE END

Dear Contortees.
Its with a heavy heart that we must inform you that Contort Yourself as you know it will be no more as of 2011.
As a famous man once said “We’ve had a good run”… and we thank everyone who’s ever played or attended any of our parties. It’s all of you that have made Contort Yourself so special to us over the past four years, so Thank You.
We’re going to go out in true style with our NYE party at Night & Day this weekend. As you know the door price is LOW and there’ll be plenty of drinks offers on the night to help loosen your boots. We’ll also have a whole host of friends joining COYO residents on the decks to see things out proper. SO if you’ve not made plans as yet we’d love to see you and help us celebrate the special night.
For more information and ticketlinks check the event page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=149187165128421
Big Love.
Team CoYo.
PS. We’ll still be running our blog with free mixes and party vibes dished out on the regs as well as ruining other peoples parties when given the opportunity as guest djs… who knows there could even be a few one offs every now and again?!?

NOBODY JACKS FASTER

Massive BRAPS to Jackmaster who won DJ Magazine’s “Best Breakthrough DJ Award” 2010 (we voted for you!). If you came down about this time last year to see him play at COYO you’ll know why he scooped the gong. We knew we were in for a top night when we got a very cryptic phone call from the man himself earlier in the day saying “Do you boys like to party, you know, really party”. This was one of my personal favourite nights we ever had in the cave, so in honer of this check out the first Numbers Podcast that takes you From Paris to Baltimore via Detroit!

A HOYA THERE MATIES!

Now i know most of you probably ran out to Piccadilly Records the day this bad boy dropped and scooped up a copy for every member of your family in an “Getting all my Xmas shopping done early” frenzy, but for those of you that dont own one of them spinny things its now been released on digital through Boomkat.
Here’s the blurb: “Manchester’s Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub present the debut release on their newly minted Hoya:hoya imprint named after the much acclaimed Manchester club night of the same name. By far the highlight of the release is Lone’s ‘Let The Music Play’, a unique sounding disco track with a thumping kick drum and distorted vocals layered to great effect before a rugged synthline takes everything down a notch. Illum Sphere, meanwhile, deploys a killer slowed down take on UK Funky which starts off with a trademark ambient wash and thudding drums before a synth reminiscent of his recent Titan 12″ on 3024 takes over and the whole thing collapses back in on itself. Rounding off the twelve is Krystal Klear with a very 80s sounding piece of modern boogie complete with handclaps and those apt crystal synths. A seriously heavy twelve and a perfect start to what promises to be a label to watch.”

at £1.95 for all 3 tracks you might as well treat yourself even if you got the 12″

MEGA MEGA MIX

Not only will this be the last Contort Yourself of 2010 but it also heralds the last Contort Yourself in our current format… With the New Year on the horizon, we’re taking a brief sabbatical over January returning back in Feb 2011 (same dates, same venue, don’t worry) but in an altogether different guise. YOU GONNA WANT ME

We’ve been following HEY TODAY! for some a while now, since the early days of COYO/ But its more recently that they’ve made an impact globally when they released one of the most anticipated single of this year “Talk To Me” on Turbo. After Tiga had been playing it in his sets for nearly a year, it finally dropped and everyone went nuts for it! Off the back of that they’ve rehashed Tigas anthemic hit “You Gonna Want Me” which is disgustingly good, had a hand in Boris Dlugosh’s massive track “Bangkok” and released their latest EP on Polymorphic Records, headed up by this single “Strange” which is a brutal argument of Techno and Dubstep which pretty much will tear your face off.
Keep an eye on these guys cos we think they’re gonna blow up real soon… and who knows you might catch them at a rave near you soon? until then enjoy these treats

To put it bluntly, Lunice is a mad bastard. A wild-man on stage, his sets encompass DJing, MCing and even a spot of breakdancing. He’s certainly someone I’d like to see bouncing around the cave at some point.

WHAT WENT WILD?

In another new and pretty much action packed topic that we’re staring on this blog we’ll be attempting to sift through our hazy memories of the last rave, looking at the back of record bags, checking out playlists and basically asking people that were less drunk than us to round up the tunes that went off and made the night.
so without further a do… here’s (from what we can remember) went wild:
Jamie Jones – Ruckus
Skream- I Love The Way
Mr. Oizo – Flatbeat
Shit Robot – I Got A Feeling
Kelis – Millionaire
Debruit – Nigeria What
Beastie Boys – Sabotage (Alex Metric Remix)
Jackpot – Brief Encounter
Diplo – Percao ft. Pantera Os Danadinhos
Joris Voorn – Sweep The Floor
Tony Lionni – Found A Place

MAJOR LAZER GET YORKE’D

Thom Yorke, yesterday.
Well, well, well. Thom Yorke’s been a busy little bee on the remix front recently with efforts for DOOM and Liars, but this one takes the biscuit.
Far more dance floor orientated than than any of his previous forays into the remixing game whilst still being incredibly dark. Plus with Diplo arsing about with Tiesto and everyone sick to the back teeth of dreadful ‘Pon De Floor’ remixes this couldn’t have come at a better time for the Major Lazer camp.
It’s never gonna be an anthem but it might scare the shit out of someone!

MEGAMIX RETURNS
THE MEGAMIX IS BACK!!! I’m sure you all know the drill by now, but for those of you new to the concept here’s how it goes:
Each Night/DJ gets a 30 min slot to burn out the purest heat, all killer no filler, sweep the floor and get the party juiced in good style. The final hour results in an every man for themselves, Back 2 Back, No Holes Barred, All Holes Plugged…Megamix!!!
We’ve lined up another cracking night filled with Manchester’s premier disc jockeying power:
NAÏVE MELODY: This year has been epic for NM, with some bookings that can only be described as that of “legendary” status…. Smagghe, Weatherall, Twitch & Wilkes, Baldelli, ooooft! Anyone putting together parties like this knows what’s up so we don’t need to tell you that they’ll crush it proper!
EAT MY BEAT: Batty Bass, Wonky House, Tropical Techno, whatever you want, these boys can bring it… if there’s a party that needs starting they’ll be sure to do the job reeeeeeaaaaaaaaal nice!
TRAMP!: Tramp was one of our favourite Manchester Nights ever, but since its death William has gone on to make a name for himself in his own right as one of the best djs in Manchester, and deservedly so. Regular bookings alongside the biggest boys in the business has seen him tearing into the biggest clubs and even taking over the reigns of the world famous OPTIMO for the night and also warming up for some guys called 2ManyDjs!?
NOWWAVE: These boys know their stuff… they’ve put on pretty much every band that is cool and even those that didn’t even know they were cool yet. They’re so far ahead of the curve one of them once managed to high five an apparition of himself from 2 weeks in the future? Needless to say they can handle themselves behind the wheels of steel, (Especially when asked to stand in for Scratch Perverts on the main stage of Parklife?!?) so get set for some serious party throbbers.
STOP MAKING SENSE: Every time I see these lads play they smack it… Tropical Dubs to Spaced out Techno to Pumping Disco, these boys’ will be heating it from the depths of their collection for you dancing pleasure.
CONTORT YOURSELF: Yeah that’s us… we’ll be going in strong and fast jackin’ out the house party rhythms and durty disco thumpers.

SAYTEK LIVE – THIS SATURDAY!!!

In the second of our summer Co-Pro’s we’re teaming up with another Manchester institution MICRON for a one off special back in the 3rd Saturday slot! Last year we clubbed together and brought NOOB down to the cave for what was one of THE PARTYS OF THE SUMMER and this one shapes up to eclipse that!
Saytek has gained a reputation for many as the most exciting and innovative live act to emerge from the UK house and techno scene in recent times. setting himself aside from the click ‘n’ play masses, Saytek’s fully improvised live shows see him get hands on with a Roland MC909 , a Kaoss Pad , synths, a sampler, Ableton and FX to create a unique deep intelligent dance floor orientated journey that combines cutting edge grooves with Detroit soul, jackin acid and tribal percussion garnished with intricate melodies, left field jazz and Latin flavours.
His talent as a live artist Has gained him headline bookings at Fabric, Sankeys, mUmU, The Zoo Project Ibiza, Cafe De Anvers Belgium, Patent Blua Berlin as well as countless clubs and festivals across the globe .Fresh from the release of his second accliamed & massively popular Zoo Project album Saytek is working with Partner Cubism records who are re-editing and sourcing top remixers for his live work to create monthly series “Saytek Live
Remixed” the first of which is out now and already gained the support from the likes of Richie Hawtin , Anthony Collins , Steve Lawler and Laurent Garnier …

SBTRKT + Sampha

SBTRKT and Sampha blew me away last night… i mean im fully into Holy Ghost (who they supported) and it was amazing to see them play as their full 4 piece live band but what preceded them was something altogether more futuristic, just made what they were doing seem a little old hat.
Thier new EP on RAMP is killer! Lead track “Break Out” is a blippy little number with 8-bit grooves and deep housey moments all stitched together with a soulful vocal courtesy of Sampha himself. The B side is all together more mellow and laid back dishing out perfect for summer vibes. you can pick the EP up from Phonica on vinyl or Beatport for all the digital geeks, and its highly recommended.
For a little bonus check out this SBTRKT rework of Radiohead:

REDINHO

We need to draw your attention to a rising talent that goes by the name of REDINHO who’s been snapped up by NUMBERS with his debut EP waiting in the wings ready to drop very soon! I dont know what catagory this falls under, but it totally sums up the NUMBERS ethos and is testament to their tastemaking. A kind of ménage à trois of future garage, bass heavy electronica and soulful pop moments…. what ever you want to call it, the new EP is DOPE and well worth checking when it drops, not to mention keeping an eye on him for live shows coming up near you soon!

SAVING ME

It’s that wonderful time of the month again! Fresh free-ness from HeavyFeer’s ‘Stamp Beats!’ label in gleaming 320 kbps with this months release featuring the vocal abilities of Jon Rice and remixture duties by Black Noise.
HeavyFeet ft. Jon Rice – Saving Me
(Original, Club Dub and Black Noise Remix)
Released 05.07.10 – Stamp! Beats
‘Saving Me’ sees HeavyFeet take on the bubbling broken beat scene to great effect, focusing on pulsating, chromatic synth chords, chunky, live drum breaks and an array of traditional broken beat instrumentation as Jon Rice (recently compared to London vocal starlet Ben Westbeech) belts out a wonderfully simple, jazzy vocal hook. HeavyFeet’s own Club Dub is a further take on some of their favorite dancefloor flavours, tackling bashment, funky and breaks with their typical heavy drum sound and ever present sub bass. Southern Fried Records’ men of the moment, Black Noise, deliver a suitably styled summer anthem, complete with sampled disco vibes, funky club drums and select cuts from Rice’s catchy vocal line… it’s got Ibiza written all over it!

Drive U Crazy
This is fast becoming one of my favourite tunes of 2010… Egyptrixx is gonna be HUGE this year. He smashed it back in February when he played for us and was a thoroughly nice chap to boot! think the reason why i love this tune so much is because it slays the club, but sounds so chilled at the same time? what ever he’s on its some next ting so watch out for more from this guy real soon.
